Last month Wicklow-based Ion Lazarenco Tiron swam the Catalina Channel off the coast of California and the Moloka’i Channel in Hawaii in quick succession. This means he has completed five of the “Ocean’s Seven” – considered to be the ultimate challenge for marathon swimmers – having already completed the English Channel, the North Channel and the Strait of Gibraltar.
He talks to Wendy about how he got into swimming, what it’s like to swim through the night in shark-inhabited waters , and what his plans are for 2017.
