In the United States, strangers made sure that an elderly woman who died in their area got the farewell she deserved.
High school teacher Ora Weinbach heard that nobody was planning to attend the funeral service of Francine Stein, who had recently died at the age of 83. Ms. Weinbach used social media to call on people to attend.
About 30 volunteers ― none of whom knew Ms Stein ― showed up to her funeral in Rockland County, New York and even participated in the ceremony.
“People are actually willing to help out,” Ms. Weinbach said, whose father Rabbi Elchanan Weinbach officiated at the funeral. She added “It’s just beautiful that there are people out there that are willing to give up their own time and come together and be there for somebody.”
Ms. Weinbach explained that, during the traditional Jewish burial, some volunteers served as pallbearers while many more picked up shovels and covered the casket with dirt after it was lowered into the ground. The local care service agency offered free transportation to the funeral, in addition to water bottles. Ms. Stein was laid to rest, surrounded by caring people.
