The Government is moving to close a loophole that has allowed supermarkets to offer cheaper alcohol to customers with loyalty cards. Under the new rules, retailers will no longer be able to reduce the price of alcohol simply because someone has a loyalty card or is part of a loyalty scheme — although the changes won’t come into effect until March 2028.
Alcohol Action Ireland has welcomed the move, but describes it as a modest step, arguing that cheap and widely available alcohol remains a major driver of alcohol harm. CEO Sheila Gilheany joined Wendy to discuss
