Lydia O’Kane speaks with Father Michael Baggot about AI

2nd October 2026

In the news over the last few weeks, we have been hearing about the growing concerns about AI technology’s potential risks.

The head of AI company Anthropic’s call for the pace of development of artificial intelligence models to slow down and to be closely monitored dominated the headlines.

Dario Amodei wrote in an online essay that developing AI was not in question, but that the risks associated with it were “serious” and that companies and governments must be given time to address them.

So, how worried should we be, and how can the Church respond to the potential of AI and the fear surrounding it?

To talk more about this, Lydia O’Kane spoke to Father Michael Baggot an Associate Professor of Bioethics at the Pontifical Regina Apostolorum Academy and an Invited Professor of Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) both in Rome.
